The potential for life on mars essay

Wadded balls of tape stuck onto my model Jupiter represented its biggest moons. The final argument proposed by opponents is that a Mars mission goes against many other competing needs for money. Since it differs greatly from Earth, survival is an important skill for astronauts to master.

Solar conditions have to do with the primary star and the conditions of the solar system and galactic the solar system's place in the galaxy namely our galaxy, currently the only galaxy known to support life. Once we make it to Mars, what comes next?

But how likely is life on Mars? Once we make it to Mars, what comes next?

The Potential for Life on Jupiter’s Moon

On Earth our solvent is water and all life forms either exist in water or maintain an aqueous environment in and between their cells. Mars is hopefully just our first step into the universe. A meteorite found in Antarctica made headlines in when scientists claimed that it could contain evidence of traces of life on Mars.

It was uncertain whether such an ocean would have frozen solid over time or could persist today. Evidence for water first showed up inwhen images from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor found gullies that appeared to have formed from flowing water.

But the hunt for Martian life may be stymied by concerns over how to prevent infecting the Red Planet with Earth life.

Followed up with images from the Viking orbiters, the crafts provided detailed images of the surface that revealed that the surface of Mars was dry, but contained landforms that indicated it may not have always been so.

The lower limit for mass is somewhere between that of Earth and that of Mars. But how likely is life on Mars?

Despite the fact that many powerful nations and space agencies attempt the space exploration, sending a manned spacecraft to Mars evinces the reinforcement of the national military.

What type of landing system will get our astronauts and colonists safely to the surface? If people were sent to Mars some day, they could investigate the results in depth. One estimate suggests that an ancient ocean could have covered as much as 19 percent of the planet's surface, compared to the 17 percent covered by Earth's Atlantic Ocean.

Scientists think that, in the past, water may have flowed across the surface in rivers and streams, and that vast oceans covered the planet.

I first learned of Europa as a kid who made planets out of tennis and whiffle balls covered in construction paper and masking tape and hung them from my bedroom ceiling on Long Island. They just need a little bit of tweaking to survive off Earth.

Other moons at Jupiter—Ganymede and Callisto—probably have oceans deep within. Such a variable orbit would have a dramatic effect on the planet's weather patterns, the highest and lowest yearly temperatures probably being outside the range most organisms can maintain homeostasis at.

Of the 34 Martian meteorites, scientists have determined that three have the potential to carry evidence of past life on Mars.

They determined that as much as three-fourths of the organic material found on the meteorite may not stem from contamination by Earth.

How these were formed is not known, however; no DNA was found. That makes getting to the surface tricky. For Earth the chemical building blocks for all life are carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen which can form into a great variety of complex structures known as amino acids, carbon being the key element for the complex bonds that allow for macromolecules to exist.

There's evidence for an ice deposit the size of Lake Superior. The planet has erosion as if there was running water at one point in Mars’ life time.

If it was like Earth then there is a high chance of life. Today, Mars is dry, desolate, and frozen. Its atmosphere is much thinner than earth’s atmosphere, so it is very hard to believe that anything could be.

A rock bed at the Gillespie Lake outcrop on Mars displays potential signs of ancient microbial sedimentary structures. Image credit: NASA A careful study of images taken by the NASA rover Curiosity has revealed intriguing similarities between ancient sedimentary rocks on Mars and structures shaped by microbes on Earth.

Life on Mars: Exploration & Evidence

Two of the most promising locations for discovering extraterrestrial life, Mars and Europa, will be the subject of further missions such as the Europa Clipper and Mars.

Understandably, the authors of the two papers, published in the journal Science, are very careful not to make the claim that they have discovered life on Mars. While the discovery has never been verified, it hasn’t ever been conclusively disproved either.
